Industrial Symbiosis in a geographical bounded system
Corfu Island as a case study

Abstract
The present project is perceiving a geographically bounded area, namely the island of Corfu, as a system where the principles of Industrial Symbiosis will be applied.
Through quantitative research, the waste of the most influential economic activities on the island will be identified. Accordingly, the waste volumes will be roughly estimated based on interviews, surveys and relative data.
At the moment, these by-products are considered as unnecessary for the system as they come to the end of their lives. They usually end up to local landfills or even disposed to the environment, practices that constitute an important cause for environmental degradation.
The aim of this project is to highlight that there are numerous technologies that can turn these waste to new products. By extending products’ lifetime and adding value on them, several economic, social and environmental benefits can arise.
Tourism and agriculture are indeed important pillars for local economic growth but there is a great potential on their by-products as well, that is yet unexploited.
